Auckland airport region is rapidly growing and there is plenty to do around here, with excellent shopping centres and duty-free shops, an adventure golf course, a fitness trail and the popular Butterfly Creek, with a café, exotic butterflies, crocodiles and a miniature railway. Rainbow’s End – the country’s largest theme park – is also within easy reach of the airport, and a great spot to entertain the family. The neighbouring suburb of Papatoetoe has shopping, and one of the country’s top golf courses, while Mangere has a busy shopping mall and a leisure centre.
Nearby Mangere Bridge has village-style shops, and you can climb to the summit of Mangere Mountain (the entrance is off Coronation Road) for amazing views over the harbour. This old Maori pa site is one of the largest in the region. Ambury Farm Park, a working farm on the shores of the harbour, is well worth a visit, with an assortment of farm animals for the children. Wine lovers can visit the cellar door of Villa Maria Wines on Kirkbride Road – one of the country's most successful winemakers. Across the bridge, neighbouring Onehunga has discount factory shopping at Dress Smart.
