The small rural town of Ashhurst lies in the heart of the Manawatu, nestled beneath the south western Ruahine ranges, at the southern gateway of the Pohangina Valley. Attractions around Ashhurst include the adventure activities of the spectacular Manawatu Gorge, the scenic walkways of the Ruahine and Tararua Forest Parks and historic Pohangina Community Church.

Ashhurst has trout fishing in both the Manawatu and Pohangina Rivers or enjoy the thrill of a jetboat ride on the Manuwatu River. Scenic Ashhurst Domain, at the western end of the Manawatu Gorge, makes an ideal spot for a picnic and also has a cafe. North of Ashhurst is the Te Apiti Wind Farm, while to the south of Ashhurst are the giant turbines of Tararua Wind Farm - the largest in the Southern Hemisphere - and the cafes and cultural attractions of Palmerston North.
