Overview

Wilderness House, built in 1878, is a beautiful historic home and garden, now lovingly restored with old-world charm and modern conveniences, offering quality accommodation.
Choose from four exquisitely decorated bedrooms, each with their own character, all with ensuite or private bathroom. Relax on the verandahs or wander around the gracious traditional garden containing protected trees, rare camellias, roses and a small private vineyard.
We offer delicious continental and cooked breakfast served in the dining room, alfresco on the verandahs or in the garden. We also have an elegant guest lounge overlooking the garden where we provide complimentary teas, coffee, home baking, port and chocolates. In winter enjoy the comfort of an open fire and a wonderful selection of books and magazines.

All bedrooms have fine, crisp cotton linen, wool duvets, fresh flowers, electric blankets, heaters, hair dryers and tea/coffee making facilities. Thick fluffy towels and fine New Zealand-made toiletries are provided in the bathrooms and ensuites. We enjoy hosting guests and take particular care to make you feel comfortable, relaxed and welcome in our home. Secluded and private, Wilderness House is just a short stroll to the village and harbour. Join us for a glass of wine in the evening. We share our home with our cat George.

"“Extraordinary Renovations”" This was given a review of 3 stars (Average)

We have stayed at Wilderness House a several times over the last five or six years, but a recent visit prompted me to finally write a review. Jim and Liz own one of the best B&B's we have ever stayed in. They are wonderful hosts, very warm and welcoming. It is always a pleasure to enjoy evening drinks with them while tasting the wine from their own vinyard and talking about local history and activities.

The vinyard and surrounding garden is exquisite, and Jim and Liz do an amazing job keeping it beautiful no matter what the season. The house was always truly gorgeous, but we were stunned upon our most recent visit a few weeks ago to see the major renovations they have done! Liz's flair for interior design and her amazing antiques collection have combined to make the house completely extraordinary, enhancing the character of the house while maintaining its historic charm. The rooms are superb, all of them are unique and have beautiful beds and linen. They do a fantastic job with breakfast and the food is well above what we expect from a B&B, even of this calibre. He is also always very generous with his time recommending local walks and attractions, pulling out maps and brochures to ensure we make the most of our time. Akaroa is a beautiful place to visit, and Wilderness House is the perfect place to stay. Thanks Jim and Liz we look forward to seeing you again!

"Just about as good as it gets...." This was given a review of 3 stars (Average)

We had 3 lovely nights at Wilderness House. The experience was wonderful. Our hosts were very friendly and eager to help. The drinks on the terrace were welcome each night. We would highly recommend Wilderness House for those who love their 'luxury B&Bs"

"Warm welcoming heaven" This was given a review of 3 stars (Average)

What a fabulous find. We arrived completing the final leg of our drive holiday through New Zealand to discover the charm of yesteryear combined with the luxury of today well within walking distance to the attractions of Akaroa village. Our hosts, Jim and Liz are the proud owners of a beautiful home built in 1878 that has been recently refurbished to a high standard while still retaining a period feel. We stayed in the Sheppard room which had its own Juliet balcony overlooking the garden and vineyard. Nice touches included new bathroom with underfloor heating, comfortable bed and plenty of room to unpack. Our hosts invited us to use their well appointed guest lounge where we enjoyed tea and coffee and a port beside the antique fireplace. Breakfast was served in the formal dining room with views to the garden. The menu changed daily, included local fresh produce and is far better than what you would find in most hotels. Jim and Liz went out of their way to make us feel welcome in their home and were a great source of knowledge about local attractions and assisted with bookings when needed. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: If you have any special needs, be sure to ask as Jim and Liz will try to accommodate them.
